Founded in 2002 by Irvin Mayfield, The New Orleans Jazz Orchestra (NOJO) is a performing arts institution dedicated to creating and presenting authentic, engaging and transformative Jazz experiences. NOJO's goal is to strengthen the business of Jazz through national tours, public and private performances, educational programming and media platforms. Based in New Orleans, the birthplace of Jazz, the 18-piece orchestra headlines at performing arts venues and clubs across America.  NOJO has an academic partnership with the University of New Orleans, where it oversees the New Orleans Jazz Institute.

As the first Artistic Director of Jazz for the Minnesota Orchestra, Irvin Mayfield premiered The Art of Passion, a new Jazz commission, with the orchestra and the Irvin Mayfield Septet in 2009. In addition to creating new Jazz works for the orchestra, Mayfield curates a concert series featuring Wynton Marsalis and Jazz at Lincoln Center, Brandford Marslais, Terence Blanchard, Lizz Wright and Maceo Parker.

COMMISSIONS

The Elysian Fields Jazz Suite explores the mythology of the Elysian Fields, the resting place for blessed souls. Dedicated to Irvin Mayfield Sr. - and to the many others who perished during Hurricane Katrina -the piece was commissioned by the University of New Orleans and was made possible by the Board of Regents Atlas Grant.

2005 - All The Saints is a spiritual work commissioned by the Episcopal Diocese of LA. All The Saints premiered in the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and served as the musical platform for Book One, NOJO’s Grammy Award-winning album.
