Irvin Mayfield's Jazz Playhouse
Celebrates the Sounds of New Orleans
For the 32nd Annual French Quarter Festival

New Orleans, Louisiana (March 27, 2015) - Get ready music lovers! For the sixth
consecutive year, Irvin Mayfield's Jazz Playhouse at the Royal Sonesta New Orleans is an
official stage for French Quarter Festival. Don't miss this incredible opportunity to witness
world-class musicians as they converge upon 300 Bourbon Street for a full menu of live
music each day. The best part is that every performance during the four-day music festival is
free and open to the public.
The weekend’s overture begins on Thursday April 9th at 5:00 p.m. when saxophonist
Aurora Nealand pays tribute to the great Sidney Bechet. One of the earliest pioneers of
Jazz, Bechet revolutionized the sound of soprano saxophone in the United States and abroad.
Nealand’s tribute promises to capture elements of Bechet’s unique musical style textured
with her own creative approach. For the 8:00 p.m. set, New Orleans Jazz Hall of Famer
Leroy Jones and his Quintet will ease audiences into a perfect Big Easy weekend with
lyrical eloquence and style.
On Friday April 10th at 2:00 p.m. Jazz lovers are in for a treat! Grammy Award winner
Irvin Mayfield and special guests will host a Book Release Party for his newly penned
collection of essays, photographs and live recordings entitled New Orleans Jazz Playhouse.
The book celebrates the city’s unique Jazz heritage and the legends that made their home in
New Orleans. The 7-CD collection mirrors the book’s seven parts, each dedicated to a day of
the week. The soundtrack is a compilation of a series of live musical recordings captured
inside the Jazz Playhouse. The records showcase the depth of talent presented throughout the
year at the Playhouse. Don’t miss this opportunity to meet Mr. Mayfield personally and take
a piece of New Orleans home with you. The book release event is free and the public is
invited to attend.
Following the release party on Friday, the Masakowski Trio makes it a family affair for the
5:00 p.m. set. Guitar legend and patriarch Steve Masakowski will bring audiences to the
place where the best of New Orleans and New York intersect. Joining him will be talented
daughter Sasha on vocals and son Martin who impresses on bass. Taking the stage for the
8:00 p.m. set is Walter “Wolfman” Washington and his Funk Trio. A seasoned musician,
Washington has performed at the great Apollo Theatre in Harlem and has accompanied
musical legends like Irma Thomas and Lee Dorsey. Mr. Washington’s Funk Trio will have
you feeling the blues late into the evening.
Come early and take a seat for Saturday April 11th’s performances. At 2:30 p.m. former
member of the Wild Magnolias June Victory and The Bayou Renegades kick off the day’s
line-up of nine continuous hours of live music. Next up at 5:00 p.m. is an Ella & Louie
Tribute with Leon “Kid Chocolate” Brown on trumpet, Eileina Williams on vocals and
Gerald French on drums. What a trio! By now you’ve settled in nicely for some amazing
shows but we’re not done yet. The final show of the day at 8:00 p.m. features the Grammy
winning maestro himself Irvin Mayfield who takes charge of the stage along with his
trumpet and an all-star lineup from the Jazz Playhouse Revue. This popular festival
tradition lets audiences experience some of today’s living legends, many of which make their
home at the Playhouse.
Still don't have your fill of Jazz? Then come back on Sunday April 12th at 2:30 p.m., when
Dave Mooney commemorates guitar virtuoso Joe Pass with his Tribute Band. Then, at
5:00 p.m., mellow out with folk-blues singer and guitarist Colin Lake back at the Playhouse
for his second French Quarter Fest appearance. Closing out French Quarter Fest weekend at
the Playhouse at 8:00 p.m. is the legendary vocalist and trombonist Glen David Andrews
who takes center stage for grand finale that you won't want to miss!
